| The good news, as I'm writing
this column, is that the reservoirs are getting a top up today! The bad news (for
visitors) is that it's actually raining…to be honest, many of us are breathing
a sigh of relief as we really do need the water before what promises to be another
long, dry summer. Recently I've been making the most of the spring sunshine
by hiking all the way up to La Concha, one of the highest peaks of the Sierra
Blanca mountain range in Marbella. The 5 hour, 11 kilometre walk from Ojen is
not for the faint-hearted but I promise you, the views will (like the walk!) take
your breath away. The first time I braved the hike and got to the top,
I couldn't believe the 360? views. Spread out inland, behind the luxury homes
dotted along the coast, you can still see plenty of green spaces, where wildlife
still thrives. Two of these areas - Ojen and Istan (which has a huge blue lake)
- are regarded as "best kept secrets" around here, while the other nature
reserve, La Mairena, is right on my doorstep. Julio Iglesias knew what
he was up to when he decided to buy a home in Ojen. It's a quiet little village
with a lost-in-time feel close to Marbella. The sort of place where the paint
has started to flake on the old whitewashed houses and all you'll hear on a sunny
Sunday afternoon is the yap-yap of a neighbourhood dog or a scooter whizzing up
into the village. The perfect hideaway, really, for a handsome Spanish heart throb
who's been mobbed by women all over the world for the last 40 years! Five
minutes from Exclusive Marbella is La Mairena, definitely one of my favourite
"escapes". A UNESCO biosphere, this gorgeous green expanse is a panorama
of trees and wildflowers as far as the eye can see. I know why our clients who've
bought there call this "paradise found" - not only do you get a home
in the heart of nature that's five minutes from the coast, there's no traffic.
Just the whisper of the breeze, an eagle soaring overhead and those amazing, priceless
